It was at Kossar's
Some of you were right on, that sign was from the front window of Kossar's Bialys, that venerable institution in the Lower East Side of NYC. You see why it's the sign of the apocalypse? If an institution like Kossar's gave in to the fad.... The bialys was still toothsome and tasty as ever. But still, I wonder what the "low carb" bagels were made of. I also wonder why people who want low-carb bagels don't just eat a little less of the real stuff...
Happily, not far from there, Katz's Deli is still its old fashioned self. Read the note on the 3 Meat Platter.

As a former New Yorker living in Bay Area, bah! I want Katz's pastrami!

Oh!My!God! I would kill for that pastrami sandwich. And of course the half-sour pickle makes it a perfect meal. It has been way too long for this ex-Manhattanite.
I don't know whether to thank you or curse you for including that photo.

I've only been to Katz's once, the last time I was in NY, like 500 years ago! But the thought of a low carb bagel is definitely a sign that soemthing is amiss in the cosmos!! I don't even want to know how they do that!

What I would do for a good ole American hotdog right now...

Oh my I really really miss east coast food. I still haven't been to Katz's yet. Lovely pictures!

That picture of the bagels is great! Makes me wish I was there. It's been over a year since I last visited. No place like NYC.

I've lived about a 30 minutes train ride away from new york since I was little, yet I still haven't tried Katz's. That pastrami sandwich looks heavenly though.

That pastrami looks delectable.

It was at Kossar's?????? Whoa. I actually do avoid a lot of carbohydrates (not because of weight; I've always been slender, but for other health and digestion reasons). But if you're going to eat a bagel, eat a proper bagel!!!
I love the pictures from Katz's, even if they do stir envy now that I live 3,000 miles away.
To kudzu above, if you miss half sour pickles, they're actually pretty easy to make yourself. I made them last summer when pickling cucumbers were in at the farmers' market here.

Pim,
I hope we're still on for our Bastille Day panel at the Ferry Building in SF...so looking forward to you moderating. Since my detective is half-French but can't boil water we should have fun!

I'm sure the food is to die for. Homemade or not, I wouldn't pay $16.20 for a bowl of beef stew. Yowza.

I'm going to NYC in a couple of months and this looks like a place to check out!!! It looks fabulous.

It's hard for me to imagine eating a low-carb bagel instead of, you know, half a real bagel or something. I imagine that people do it either because they aren't thinking it through ("hey! low-carb means it's healthy!" or "hey! low-carb means I can eat a bagel! bagels are BAD otherwise!") or because they haven't been reading ingredient labels and learning about nutritional stuff on all the supposedly healthy lo-whatever food.
