A day at the races

We spent the afternoon at the race today -plenty of new things to learn for me, exacta, trifacta, words that probably sound a lot more interesting in the New Orleans accent than they actually are.

We also had lunch here, and being that this is food-focused New Orleans, the food was not bad at all. We had a good crab cake, decent shrimp cocktail, delicious gumbo, and a rather odd sounding Corned Beef Po' Boy that David gobbled all up before I could taste.

There's even an oyster bar right there, on the race track. Only in New Orleans.

It's good to see the race track all cleaned up and back in business! We may have to head back for Jazz Fest in May. Don't leave without getting some good fried green tomatoes and remoulade.

My ex roommate is from NO and her whole family is in the restaurant biz there. She spent most of Christmas Day in NO and then flew to Oakland where we picked her up and drove her directly to Tahoe on Christmas Night. She was clutching a little ice chest as she got off her flight. We arrived at Tahoe at midnight, famished. She then opened up the chest and revealed its amazing contents - crawfish bisque with each little critter stuffed with I don't know what? Deliciousness!, woah it was incredible, stuffed melon (squash?) which was amazing, mushroom sauce with giblets, and lots of other good things. Everything was the best of the best since it was a feast meal. Since I'd eaten not much all day except some foie gras on toast for lunch it quelled my hunger in the best way possible, and since I havent been to NO for over 6 years now, it was also a special and fabulous taste of a city where I have had the best of times.

We had Spike Lee visit us at work just before Christmas showing us "When the levees Broke". have you seen it? It is very moving and well worth a view.

Never had a corned beef po' boy, but I wonder if it's the same corned beef my mother uses to fix corned beef and cabbage...

Those horses are gorgeous Pim, great photos. Love the jockey with the mud splattered on his face. Leave it to NO to have great food at their race track. No liquid American cheese on top of stale chips, eh?

FYI - Technically, it is "a day at the raceS". Plural. You don't go to see only one race, but several. Reference the Marx Brothers movie...
