La Ferme de Mon Père to close, and foodie survival kit!

My friend Adrian in Paris in working over time giving me interesting news today. First of, Marc Veyrat is closing La Ferme de Mon Père in Megève. Happily, L'Auberge de l'Eridan in Annecy will remain open, as well as the new-ish restaurant at the Roland Garros tennis club where he oversees the menu. There is no news yet on his laboratoire reportedly to be open in Paris.

Another one -and this is hilarious- a Mobile Foodie Survival Kit

I recieved a foodie kit as a gift when my husband and I went camping with freinds. I thought it was great. Common sense when using it, if you know the tops are a little loose just be carefull. But for the camper or backpacker this is small lite and handy also if you don't like the choice of spices you can always subsitute some.

Hi Pim,

I did in fact buy the Mobile Foodie Survival Kit last summer. I love Flight001. I would probably use the kit like they say (carry it around to season bland restaurant food), but it's not all that well constructed. The spice jars are not perfectly tight, so the kit is pungent-smelling and always full of little bits of herbs and powdered onion. It's not an unpleasant scent, but I would prefer not to transfer it to all my bags. ;b That said, though, it now sits in my pantry and has saved my butt many a time when I ran out of some spice and was able to make it up using my Survival Kit.

Although the spectacle at Mon Pere is, well, spectacular, I have to say that my one experience with there left me cold. Not only did he treat staff like serfs, but the food was overdone in every possible way. No finesse, no balance, no pleasure. Veyrat doesn't deserve his reputation and can't compare to Arzak, Robuchon, Adria, Keller, etc. The beret says it all: poseur.

If you're in Megeve, go to Fleur de Sel. Run by a wonderful young couple who also have an ajoining cave. Really great.

The survival kit is hysterical -- but it's my fervent hope that no-one takes it seriously. Since the company's called "Flight 001" I would guess I'm safe in assuming that the kit is geared toward airline cuisine. As any true foodie knows, the only way to survive an in-flight meal is to bring your own sumptuous little sandwich, fruit, pastry and/or chocolate...
